HTC Desire joins Nexus One in carrier-free infamy

The Nexus One solved one of my biggest problems as far as owning a device was concerned; I could own a phone without involving the carrier, and could switch to another provider with that phone. I am not big on contracts, and after all the mess I went through replacing my G1 5 times due to the ignorance of the carrier employees, I had a device that was 100% mine, unlocked and all. When Google announced they were closing the online store, I was upset because I was afraid the dream had died. Fortunately, HTC and Newegg seemed  to think it was still worth it, because now we have the HTC Desire Unlocked  on Newegg.com!

The Desire will work on pretty much any GSM network, but will only have 3G in UMTS land (read: NOT US). The $599 pricetag is a bit more than the Nexus One, and the SenseUI based handheld has only had partial success in the Mod community. While US users may still want to consider the Nexus, this release brings to mind that, it appears, HTC is still paying attention to the Nexus fanbase, and hopefully their Unlocked releases will not end with the Desire.

I stood in line for the G1 release, clicked refresh until my index finger bled waiting for the N1 sales page to finally drop, and have been deeply in love with the modding community. I have spent several years deeply involved in using and promoting Open Source over all else and could not be happier with the growing Android ecosystem. Now, however, i aim to contribute. Not just developing but spreading the word to all non-Android users. I have already convinced 3 friends to step away from the iPhone, and i dont plan to stop!
